Asphalt Shingles in Calgary

Alberta's weather doesn't go easy on a roof. Hail, strong wind, heavy snow load, and repeated freeze-thaw cycles all put real stress on roofing material, and asphalt shingles have earned their place as the most common option in Calgary because modern shingle lines are built to handle exactly that. They're also the most cost-effective roofing material available, which matters whether you're replacing a full roof now or budgeting for one down the road.

As an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor, Epic Roofing & Exteriors installs premium asphalt shingle lines in a range of colours and styles, including options built specifically for impact resistance in hail-prone areas.

Is Asphalt Shingle Roofing Right for Your Home?

Asphalt shingles aren't the only option, but they cover most situations well. They tend to make the most sense when:

!

You want a reliable, well-tested material without paying a premium for synthetic or shake

!

Your roof has a standard slope and doesn't require a specialty material

!

You want a wide range of colour and style options to match your home

!

You're looking for manufacturer warranty coverage backed by a Platinum Preferred Contractor

!

Hail resistance matters to you, and you're open to an impact-resistant shingle line

!

You want a roof that lasts 20 to 30 years, without paying for the 40-plus year lifespan of synthetic materials

If your priorities lean more toward maximum lifespan or a specific architectural look, synthetic or shake roofing might be a better fit, and we'll walk you through that comparison during your assessment.

Asphalt vs. Synthetic vs. Shake: How to Decide

All three hold up in Calgary's climate. Here's how they actually compare.

Deciding between repair and replacement comes down to a few practical questions. We don’t have a financial incentive to push you toward the more expensive option. During your assessment, we’ll walk the property with you, explain what we’re seeing, and recommend whichever option actually makes sense for your home and budget.

?

What's the cost difference?

Asphalt shingles are the most cost-effective option upfront. Synthetic shingles cost more but last longer, and shake roofing typically costs the most, due to both material and installation labour.

?

How long does each option last?

Asphalt shingle roofs typically last 20 to 30 years. Synthetic shingles can last 40 years or more. Shake roofing's lifespan depends heavily on maintenance, but well-maintained shake can last several decades.

?

Which holds up best to hail?

Impact-resistant asphalt shingles are a strong, affordable option for hail resistance. Synthetic shingles generally offer even better impact resistance. Shake roofing is more vulnerable to hail damage and needs more frequent inspection after a storm.

Asphalt Shingle Options We Install

Architectural (Laminate) Shingles

Architectural shingles, also called laminate shingles, are thicker than the old-style 3-tab shingles, with a dimensional look that mimics wood shake or slate, and typically carry stronger manufacturer warranties.

Impact-Resistant (Class 4) Shingles

Built specifically to resist hail damage, Class 4 impact-resistant shingles are worth considering given how often Calgary sees hail. Most Class 4 shingles use Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS), which is a rubberizing polymer blended into the asphalt. This "rubberized" asphalt allows the shingle to deform and bounce back when hit by hail, rather than breaking or losing its protective granules. It's worth asking your insurance provider whether impact-resistant roofing qualifies you for a premium discount, some do.

Your Claim. Our Expertise.

Storms & Insurance

Hail is the most common reason Calgary homeowners end up needing new shingles outside of a planned replacement. Asphalt shingles can bruise or crack from a hailstorm even when the damage isn't obvious from the ground, and impact-resistant lines hold up better than standard shingles. If your shingles have taken a hit, we can inspect the roof, document the damage with photos, and work with your insurance adjuster if you decide to file a claim.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do asphalt shingles cost installed in Calgary?

Asphalt shingle roof replacements in Calgary typically fall within the same $8,000 to $15,000+ range noted on our roof replacement page, with the exact cost depending on shingle line, roof size, and complexity. A free assessment gets you an exact, itemized quote.

How long do asphalt shingles last in Calgary?

Most asphalt shingle roofs last 20 to 30 years, depending on the shingle line, installation quality, and how much wear the roof takes from storms over the years.

Are asphalt shingles good for hail?

Standard asphalt shingles can be damaged by hail, but impact-resistant Class 4 shingles are built specifically to hold up better. Given how often Calgary sees hail, it's worth asking about impact-resistant options when you're choosing a shingle line.

What's the difference between 3-tab and architectural shingles?

3-tab shingles are flatter and more budget-friendly. Architectural (laminate) shingles are thicker, have a more dimensional look, and typically carry stronger manufacturer warranties.

Does Epic Roofing install Owens Corning shingles?

Yes. As an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor, we install Owens Corning shingle lines along with other manufacturer options, and our Owens Corning installations can qualify for extended warranty coverage.

Can insurance cover asphalt shingle damage?

If the damage is from hail, wind, or another covered event, insurance may cover some or all of the cost. We can inspect the roof, document the damage, and work with your adjuster if you decide to file a claim.
